Dr. Alexander Liposuction Q & A

May 8th, 2012

Q: I really want liposuction, but I have 10 more pounds before I reach my goal. Should I have surgery now?

A: It is recommended to be within 15-20lbs. of your ideal weight before having a surgical procedure for best long term results. Liposuction removes stubborn fat from areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. Depending on the area being treated, you may feel a boost of confidence and motivation after surgery that will help you shed those final 10 lbs. You are the best person to answer that question.

Q: I heard that if you undergo liposuction that you can get lumps in the areas treated, is that true?

A: Dr. Alexander is a board certified plastic surgeon with over a decade of experience. His surgical technique and expertise decreases that chances of lumps appearing in long term results after surgery. It is normal to have some small lumps post liposuction due to residual edema or swelling that naturally takes time to resolve. Most often it is recommended to massage lotion of those areas to help it become smooth over time.

Common Facial Aging Questions & Answers

April 17th, 2012

Q: My skin is becoming blotchy, is there a way to a achieve more even skin complexion?

A: There are many ways to try and improve skin complexion. Depending on doctor and specialty you will hear of peels, lasers, and creams. Dr. Alexander has found that his patients who have started the OBAGI Nu-Derm System have achieved great results. The product uses a series of prescription grade ingredients that are designed to get down into the living tissues of the facial skin promoting new cell growth and higher cell turnover rate resulting in a more even skin texture and complexion.

Q: The corners of my mouth droop down and make me look as if I am frowning when I am not. Is there a way to fix that?

A: Depending on multiple factors such how much excess skin, age and elasticity, there are a couple options. A younger patient may appreciate treatment using injectable facial fillers. Fillers may provide temporary fullness to the facial areas that lost volume over time. A more permanent solution would be facelift surgery. Facelift surgery provides enhancement to the facial skin in the lower third portion of the face (from about cheek bone to neck). Although this procedure is more permanent, it does require more down time and aftercare.

The best way to find what is best for you is to meet with Dr. Alexander personally at a consultation appointment in his Las Vegas practice! Contact us at 702-242-6776 to assist with your facial needs!

Traditional Blepharoplasty, Eyelid Surgery

April 10th, 2012

Many people consider the eyes to be the defining feature of the face. Eyelid surgery removes excess fat and skin around the upper and/or lower eyelids for a more refreshed look that reveals throughout the whole face.

Who is blepharoplasty for?

-Men or women in good health with realistic expectations that can benefit from improvement with heavy bags or fat pads under the eyes and/or loose skin.

Anesthesia used?

-Some plastic surgeons will perform this procedure under local anesthesia with some sedation. Dr. Alexander has found that it is more comfortable and safe for the patient to perform this surgery under general anesthesia.

Length of surgery?

-Approximately two hours depending on how many lids will be performed.

What is the recovery like?

-Blepharoplasty is said to be one of the easier cosmetic procedures to recover from. Some amounts of swelling and bruising are to be expected and they will go through normal stage of maturation with time. Although there will be recommended limitations for the first several weeks following surgery, most patients find they are feeling well and upbeat after just a few days!

What is the duration of results?

-Over time with normal aging and gravity the skin will start to adjust, however, most men and women appreciate their surgical enhancement for many years.

Weather Related Skincare Tips

April 3rd, 2012

The sun is one our biggest culprits when trying to stop the hands of aging time. The UV rays the sun produces are known to cause pre-mature aging, skin cancer (particularly melanoma,) wrinkles, severe burns and age spots. Here are some tips to keep in mind when out and about in the spring and summer months!

  • The ingredient that protects our skin from UV rays in sunscreens deteriorates over time and expires after a year. Now is the time to through away some old sunscreens and purchase new ones!
  • The amount of sunscreen that needs to be applied varies slightly on height and weight, but for the average adult 1 ounce (enough to fill a shot glass) is sufficient.
  • You don’t have to be at a pool to develop a sun burn. You can develop a sun burn even when you are outside walking the dog, taking the kids to the park, or playing sports. Make sure you make applying sunscreen part of your daily routine for all family members and to reapply if you will be involved in water activites.
  • If the sun burns your skin, aloe gel or moisturizers with vitamin E can help sooth and replenish your skin.
  • Stay hydrated!
  • Guard your lips. Although it may be hard to resist the urge to put on lip gloss, some can actually magnify the sun’s rays raising your risk for damage and skin cancer. Find a balm or chapstick that has SPF 20 or 30 before heading outside.
  • Keep in mind the most delicate areas susceptible for sun damage are your hands, face, neck, lips and hair and keep them protected!

If you have existing sun damage to your skin, there are treatments that can help improve the complexion and texture of your skin. Las Vegas board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Alexander, can evaluate and recommend specific surgical and non-surgical treatments for your skin. Contact us today 702-242-6776!

Thigh Lift Frequently Asked Questions

March 27th, 2012

Q: What does the thigh lift address?

A: There are several different types of thigh lifts that can help directly remove skin and fat to improve the contour of the legs. The combined effects of aging, gravity, fluctuations in weight, and a loss of skin elasticity all contribute to loss of tone in the thighs as we age. Dr. Alexander has found his patients to be very happy with the inner thigh lift, also known as medial thighplasty. This approach allows for the best enhancement to the inner aspect of the legs while leaving the incision in an inconspicuous location.

Q: Where is the incision located?

A: The medial thigh lift incision is located in the inner thigh in the natural crease where the thigh and the groin meet. Patients appreciate this approach best because the scar is in a concealed area. The actual length of the incision will vary depending on how much can safely be removed and the best aesthetic outcome.

Q: How is the outer thigh treated?

A: The medial thigh lift is ideal for tightening up the skin and smoothing the contour of the inner thigh, however it typically does not address the outer portion of the thighs. Depending on your anatomy some patients are candidates to combine the inner thigh lift with liposuction to the outer thigh.

Schedule a consultation appointment with Las Vegas Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Alexander to see how we can help you achieve a more firm and toned leg.

How to Reduce Age Defying Stress

March 20th, 2012

Age actually is a state of mind! Although Dr. Alexander is an expert in plastic surgery and available to provide facial rejuvenation for a younger more refreshed look, there is a lot you can do to prevent premature aging. Try these mental tweaks to live a healthier, happier and younger life.

  • Worry less! Worrying is like sitting in a rocking chair. It will give you something to do, but you won’t go anywhere. To banish worries, write them down on a piece of paper so your mind can compartmentalize and move forward. Limiting anxiety can prevent chronic pain, depression and even heart issues!
  • Laugh more! New research shows that laughing until it hurts releases endorphins (feel good brain chemicals) that can boost your mood, reduce pain, lower blood pressure and improve the immune system.
  • Monitor the position and duration of how you catch your ZZZ’s. It is recommended that you try to sleep 8-10 hours each night. It has also been studied that back sleepers are less prone to facial and eye wrinkles. Try adjusting some of your sleeping habits for a more stable mind set and decrease wrinkle development.

Happier people live longer and healthier lives which in return make them feel and look younger. Maintaining good health may still not alter your genetic make-up. Some aging is inevitable. Contact Las Vegas Dr. Alexander & Co if you are experiencing unwanted facial changes and discuss options that are best for you!

Teen Plastic Surgery Candidates: Q & A

March 13th, 2012

Parents may be confused as to whether they should allow their young child or teen to have plastic surgery. Even if the parents and child agrees, there is still a third party opinion. The surgeon also has the ultimate say as to who is a good candidate to under go reconstructive or cosmetic surgery. Generally, it is not recommended by Dr. Alexander and most board certified plastic surgeons to undergo surgery while underage, however, there are some exceptions.

Questions that an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon may seek to answer to see if your teen is ready for surgery include:

Q: Is your teen emotionally and cognitively mature?

A: Not all teens interested in plastic surgery are candidates. A patient may not be ready for surgery if he or she is not emotionally mature. The surgeon may ask extensive questions to determine that your child understands what will and will not happen before, during and after surgery.

Q: Is your teen physically mature?

A: Different parts of the body mature at different ages. For example, ears are typically about 80% of their adult size by age 5 and children can undergo otoplasty (ear pinning surgery) fairly young. On the other hand, rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is usually not performed on a patient until they are 15 or older. The surgeon will examine the patients anatomy to determine candidacy.
