Breast Augmentation: Myth vs. Reality

Breast augmentation is the most common form of cosmetic surgery performed in the United States with more than 250,000 performed every year. As you’ve conducted your own research about this procedure, chances are you have discovered a volume of information about the various breast augmentation techniques, as well as the different implants that can be used during surgery. However, with the prevalence of information on the Internet, it can sometimes be hard to distinguish fact from fiction. To ensure that you understand the truth about breast augmentation, Dr. Alexander & Co. have provided you with some of the most common myths that have developed about breast augmentation over the years.

“Everyone will know I’ve had work done.”

There is a common misconception that it will be obvious to others if you have a breast augmentation performed. This will depend on the implant size you choose. Dr. Alexander will consider your cup size preference as well as evaluate your height and body shape to ensure that you attain the breast enhancement results that you are looking for. Selecting an experienced surgeon who takes the little things into account, greatly increases the likelihood that your results will look natural.

“My implants have to be replaced every 10 years.”

It is not at all uncommon for implants to last in upwards of 20 years. Although leaks in saline implants and ruptures in silicone gel implants require replacement, the most common reason for implant replacement is the patient’s desire to have them removed for larger implants.

“My implants will limit the activities that I can perform.”

Even though downtime is needed to fully recover from a breast augmentation, most patients can return to work after a week with certain restrictions and begin their normal activity level after about four to six weeks. This means that most physical activities, such as gym training, running, biking, and swimming can be resumed.

“Breast augmentation will cause my breasts to feel unnatural.”

Given the leaps and bounds of technology over the years, manufacturers are able to give both types of implants a similar feel to that of a real breast. Although every person has their own preference, silicone gel implants are often thought to feel the most natural.

“A breast augmentation will correct drooping breasts.”

Breast augmentations are made to do two things: increase the size and improve the symmetry of the breasts. If a woman wants to reposition and correct drooping breasts, then she may be  a candidate for a breast lift. At our Las Vegas practice, Dr. Alexander frequently performs breast lift with implants if his patients will benefit from both techniques.
