Experience matters. Dr. Alexander is uniquely qualified in Breast Enhancement procedures. Breast augmentation provides women with small or unevenly sized breasts a fuller, firmer and better-proportioned look that can improve self confidence and help women look and feel their best through a safe procedure performed by a trusted and esteemed plastic surgeon like Dr. Alexander. Through the placement of saline or silicone implants, patients can enjoy natural-looking breasts that are one or more cup sizes larger after the operation.
Patients may choose to undergo breast augmentation for many different medical and aesthetic purposes, including balancing breast size and compensating for reduced breast mass after pregnancy or surgery. It is often combined with other procedures such as a breast lift to achieve the precise results each patient desires.
Every woman is unique in both her desires and her body shape. With that in mind, Dr. Alexander takes the time during the pre-operative consultation to learn what each patient hopes to gain from breast augmentation surgery, along with deciding which implant type, size and placement is best. In this way, each patient enjoys completely individualized treatment with her specific goals in mind. Experience matters. After almost two decades of experience with breast enhancements and being a foremost authority in plastic surgery of the breast, you owe it to yourself to consult with Dr. Alexander before having a breast procedure.
Breast implants are silicone shells filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel. Both implant types are very safe, and each offers its own advantages. Dr. Alexander will help you decide which kind is right for you. During surgery, he will place the implants behind each breast, underneath either breast tissue or the chest wall muscle and then adjust the tissue to enhance breast shape, contour and attractiveness.
After many years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved silicone breast implants for breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Alexander is proud to offer patients the option of silicone gel-filled breast implants.
The breast augmentation procedure lasts one to two hours and is typically performed with general anesthesia. Incisions are made in inconspicuous places on the breast to minimize scar visibility. These may be located:
The breast is then lifted, creating a pocket into which the implant is inserted.
Implant placement beneath the muscle of the chest offers a few advantages over placement beneath the breast tissue only. These include possible reduced risk of capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant) and less interference with mammogram examinations. Possible disadvantages include elevated pain in the first few days following surgery. Dr. Alexander will discuss which option may be best for you during your one-on-one consultation.
After the implants have been inserted and positioned beneath the nipples, the incisions are stitched closed utilizing advanced plastic surgical techniques to minimize scarring. A surgical bra is then worn to secure the breasts.
Allow yourself time to relax and heal. Dr. Alexander performs all of his procedures with great care and precision to ensure that patients can enjoy a quick and healthy recovery. After breast augmentation, patients will feel tired and sore, but usually feel like themselves after a day or two. Most patients can return to light work after a week, but should avoid exercise and strenuous activities for at least 4-6 weeks. Some discoloration and swelling may occur, but will disappear quickly. The results of this procedure are visible right away.
There are no stitches to remove with Dr. Alexander's technique. Any post-operative pain, swelling and sensitivity typically diminishes over the first few weeks. Scars from breast augmentation will begin to fade in a few months and can continue to fade for several years. Most scars are inconspicuous.
A motivating factor behind breast implant exchange or removal is when a woman may simply decide she no longer desires implants, or that the specific size she opted for no longer meets her cosmetic goals. Other reasons for this procedure may include implant deflation or capsular contracture (scar tissue). Other patients may decide to change their saline implants for the FDA approved Silicone Gel Implants that may have a more natural look or feel than their current saline implants or may simply want larger implants. Whatever the reason, any patient dissatisfied with her breast implants is a potential candidate for this surgery.
