2011 Cosmetic Surgery Statistics

In 2011, Americans spent almost $10 billion on surgical and non surgical procedures. Of that total approximately 63% was on surgical procedures, 17% on injectables, 16% on skin enhancement, and 4% on other treatment options. In comparison to 2010, there was only a less than 1% increase in total number of cosmetic surgical procedures, with over 1.6 million surgical procedures performed in 2011. Below are some of the 2011 statistics reported by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Top 5 Cosmetic Surgical Procedures 2011 vs. 2010

Liposuction                                                             325,332 (12.6% Increase)

Breast Augmentation                                             316,848 (-0.4% Decrease)

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)                                  49,410 (3.1% Increase)                   

Blepharoplasty                                                       147,540 (-3.0% Decrease)

Breast Lift                                                                127,054 (4.7% Increase)

  • Top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures in 2010 in order were breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, liposuction, and abdominoplasty
  • For the first time in three years liposuction has outshined breast augmentation as the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States. Until 2008 liposuction had been the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure, but from 2008-2010 breast augmentation held that title.
  • Top 5 nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in 2011 were: Botox, hyaluronic acid, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, and IPL laser treatment.
  • Since 2000 Botox has been the most popular cosmetic nonsurgical procedure.
