Breast Augmentation Myth Busters
Myth: Implants correct sagging
Fact: If you are experiencing mild sagging, a breast augmentation can help achieve a more uplifted look by inserting an implant and increasing the volume of your breasts. The extent to which they are lifted fluctuates between each individual. However, most patients can appreciate the improvement in their new breasts. For a patient with moderate to severe sagging, a separate breast lift procedure may be desired. Dr. Alexander can determine what you are a candidate for based on your specific anatomy during your consultation appointment.
Myth: Breast Augmentation is risky for women over 55 years of age
Fact: As long as you are healthy, in good medical condition, and free of breast cancer, you may be a great candidate for breast augmentation! A pre-operative appointment with a general practitioner, lab work, and mammograms are used to deem who is medically stable to undergo breast surgery.
Myth: Breast implants should always be placed under the muscle
Fact: This recommendation could have been provided to you from your best friend, but you and your friend have different breast anatomy. Both breast implant position, above and below the muscle, provide important roles. Putting an implant below the muscle provides an additional layer of tissue to cover the implant making it less palpable. This is most important in patients with thin tissue integrity who have selected saline breast implants. If you have thick skin or select a silicone implant, Dr. Alexander may recommend placing the implant above the muscle to allow for more attractive shape and movement. There are benefits to both implant positions depending on your individual anatomy!
