Gynecomastia Quick Facts

  • The word gynecomastia originates from two Greek words meaning “woman like breasts” – “gyne” meaning woman and “mastos” meaning “breast” respectively.
  • It is a condition that affects 40-60% of males
  • Large female-like breasts can form in a variety of different ages – some develop gynecomastia as a child and grow out of it, while other conditions don’t become apparent until around puberty and may remain until adulthood.
  • Excessive use of alcohol, marijuana and anabolic steroids have been said to be associated with gynecomastia.
  • Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts.
  • Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in the majority of cases of gynecomastia.
  • In 2010 there were 18,000 men reported who selected surgical enhancement to obtain a more masculine physique.
  • Gynecomastia usually does not respond to healthy diet or exercise

Treatment for gynecomastia is done through breast reduction surgery. It is a procedure that can directly reduce and remove excess fat and glandular tissue to the overly developed male breast, resulting in a chest that is more firm.
