Understanding General Anesthesia

Here at Dr. Alexander and Co. you will find that Dr. Alexander himself, and his staff, are dedicated to educating you about your surgical and non-surgical options beginning with your initial telephone call. We find it very important to teach our patients every aspect about their desired procedure to make them feel confident about making an informed decision. Some of Dr. Alexander’s most detailed questions are not even about the anticipated outcome of surgery, but the safety and comfort of the surgery, specifically undergoing general anesthesia. Like many patients today considering elective cosmetic surgery, you may have concerns about the risks or side effects. It is our pleasure to help educate you and soothe your concerns.

From Dr. Alexander’s very first surgical case, to his most recent, he has always been committed to the highest levels of anesthesia services. He has been working with anesthesia doctors and many times has admitted to “trusting his own family” to go under general anesthesia with them. All of the anesthesiologists that Dr. Alexander works with are fully trained physicians and are board certified in the field of Anesthesiology by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). With the improvements in the level of training, advances in monitoring equipment, and much improved anesthesia medications, this makes the risk of anesthesia nearly equivalent as taking a drive in your car.

General Anesthesia is typically used for involved plastic surgical procedures, and Dr. Alexander has found that for your safety and comfort, it is best to “sleep while he works.” Prior to your surgery, Dr. Alexander orders extensive pre-operative tests to make sure you are at optimal health before surgery. The day of your surgery, you will have an opportunity to meet and talk to your anesthesiologist personally and they will be happy to provide answers to any last minute questions you may have. During surgery, they are responsible for providing not only the anesthetic, but monitor your vital signs, and your overall continuing medical assessment. After the surgery, most patients find that recovery is smooth with minimal side effects.

For further questions and evaluation, it is recommended you speak with Dr. Alexander in person at your consultation appointment. At that time, he can recommend which method of anesthesia is most appropriate for your surgery and health. Do not hesitate to contact our office, we have the answers to your most concerning questions! Feel good about waking up to your dream self!
