Eyelid Surgery

“I could not be more satisfied with not only the results of my surgery but the overall experience with Dr. Alexander and his amazing staff. I felt 100 percent comfortable from my first visit at the office for my initial consultation all the way to my last post-op appointment. I would refer Dr. Alexander and his team to my family and friends without any hesitation.”

The eyes are one of the most important features when revealing to others how we truly feel. Unfortunately, as we get older, the area surrounding the eyes begins to display the signs of aging. The skin loses its elasticity and begins to droop, and fine lines and wrinkles develop that can cause individuals to look fatigued or unhappy and also make them feel less confident about their physical appearance. To restore a youthful appearance to the eyes and help patients feel more confident about themselves, Dr. George Alexander performs eyelid surgery in the safety of a certified state-of-the-art surgical center.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

An eyelid lift, also known as “blepharoplasty,” is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the eye area by resculpting the upper and/or lower eyelids. The procedure can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other facial procedures, such as a facelift or forehead lift for more complete facial rejuvenation.

Eyelid surgery can effectively improve the appearance of:

  • Droopy eyelids
  • Deep creases around the eyes
  • Lower eyelid puffiness and “bags”
  • Impaired vision due to hanging skin in the upper eyelids

Candidates for Eyelid Surgery

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are usually middle-aged men and women who are in good overall health, do not smoke, and feel that the appearance of their eyes makes them look “tired” or “worn out.” Although eyelid surgery is very effective at improving the eye area, patients should have realistic expectations about the outcome of their procedure. Based on his review of the patient’s health history and examination of the patient’s eye area, Dr. Alexander will use his 20 years of experience to individualize a surgical plan.

Eyelid Lift Procedure

Eyelid surgery is usually performed using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on the correction needed, Dr. Alexander may perform surgery on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Dr. Alexander will make inconspicuous incisions that are hidden in the natural creases of the eyelids for an upper blepharoplasty and just below the lashes in a lower blepharoplasty. Depending on each patient’s current condition, Dr. Alexander may reposition fat deposits, tighten the underlying muscles and tissues, and remove any excess skin before closing the incisions with fine sutures. The entire procedure usually takes between one to two hours to complete depending on the amount of correction needed.

Recovery from Eyelid Surgery

In addition to getting plenty of rest, patients will be instructed to apply cold compresses and take prescribed medication to minimize discomfort, swelling, bruising, and irritation to the eyes. Most patients can return to work in about a week following the procedure, but they should avoid any strenuous activities and exercises for at least four to six weeks. To ensure a safe and swift recovery, patients should follow Dr. Alexander’s specific post-operative instructions.

Results of Eyelid Surgery

Although the results of eyelid surgery are not seen immediately, they will become apparent over the coming days and weeks as the swelling and bruising subside, and the results will continue to improve for up to a year after surgery. Most scars from eyelid surgery are well concealed and continue to fade over time until they are virtually unnoticeable. Dr. Alexander strives to provide his patients with noticeable, yet natural-looking results that are more attractive and youthful. Most patients are extremely satisfied with their “new look” and can expect their results to last many years. To maintain long-lasting results, patients should follow proper skin care protection, including wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day.
