Rhinoplasty

“Exceptional, excellent bedside manner. Dr. Alexander is truly an artist. Approximately ten days post operation, nobody knew I had undergone a rhinoplasty surgery, yet I had quite an extensive procedure performed correcting my wide nasal bridge, dorsal bump and had my nasal tip refined. I am extremely pleased with the results and I am post- op 1 month now. I am a physician myself and returned to work 10 days after surgery with no problems. I would highly recommend Dr. Alexander without any hesitation. I also want to make a mention that his office staff is amazing, thorough, informative, and extremely friendly. They are truly exceptional!!”

The nose is often one of the most noticeable features on a person’s face and often plays a role in defining facial beauty. Factors such as genetics and traumatic injuries can leave people unsatisfied with the overall appearance of their nose. In most instances, an unattractive nose can also cause individuals to feel self-conscious in social settings. To attain a more aesthetically pleasing nose, many men and women undergo rhinoplasty. Also known as “nose surgery,” Dr. George Alexander performs this cosmetic procedure in the safety of a certified state-of-the-art surgical center.

What Is a Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to put the nose in harmony with the rest of the face by surgically sculpting the nasal bone, cartilage and soft tissues.

Individuals commonly seek rhinoplasty to:

  • Remove any bumps or depressions on the bridge of the nose
  • Modify the width of the bridge of the nose
  • Reshape the tip of the nose
  • Narrow and/or reshape the nostrils

Candidates for Rhinoplasty

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals who in good overall health, do not smoke, and are at least 18 years of age. In addition, they should have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure and seek rhinoplasty to feel better about themselves.

The results achievable from rhinoplasty is dependent upon the individual’s nasal structure, skin thickness, age, and facial shape. Dr. Alexander takes all of these factors into account to create a fully individualized surgical plan that will provide you with the results you desire.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Dr. Alexander usually performs rhinoplasty as an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia. The entire procedure takes between one to three hours to complete, depending on the individual patient, the extent of the correction needed, and the technique used. Dr. Alexander uses one of two techniques when performing rhinoplasty:

  • Open Rhinoplasty – Dr. Alexander makes an incision across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) to allow maximum visibility throughout the entire procedure. This is the preferred technique.
  • Closed Rhinoplasty – Dr. Alexander makes incisions inside of the nasal passages. This technique is rarely used.

With both techniques, Dr. Alexander gently lifts the tissues covering the nose and sculpts the cartilage and bone to the desired shape. If needed, he may take some cartilage from the septum to further augment the nose. Once Dr. Alexander achieves the desired appearance, he will re-drape the tissues and close the incisions with fine sutures. If needed, Dr. Alexander will also alter the size and shape of the nostrils.

The best technique for each patient depends on several factors, and Dr. Alexander will discuss this with you in detail during your pre-surgical consultation.

Recovery from Rhinoplasty

After your rhinoplasty, you may experience some temporary swelling and discomfort, but prescribed medication will help alleviate these symptoms. During your recovery, you should allow yourself time to relax and heal. Most patients feel well enough to return to work one week after the procedure, but they should avoid strenuous activities for at least four to six weeks.

Results of Rhinoplasty

The results of a rhinoplasty will appear gradually as the swelling subsides over the next few weeks and months, and it typically takes up to a year to see the final results. Rhinoplasty is very satisfying and often life-changing. Since the results of rhinoplasty are meant to be permanent, patients should have clear goals in mind when discussing their preferences with Dr. Alexander during their personalized consultation.
