Breast Augmentation Myth Busters

Myth: Adding an implant to my breasts will make my nipples look larger

Fact: Throughout the healing process post breast augmentation surgery your body will often go through changes to create new elastic skin in the chest region to match the implant size. With normal healing, the skin around the areola is enlarged and the nipple size usually remains the same. However, selecting a large implant size may place you at a greater risk of being more likely to experience stretching, wrinkling, and rippling.

Myth: Saline implants are safer than silicone implants.

Fact: There is a list of pros and cons as to why patients may prefer selecting a saline or silicone implant. Both implants are FDA approved and considered equally safe. The saline implants are filled with sterilized salt water, similar to an IV at a hospital. If your saline implant deflates, the fluid will be absorbed by the body. Patients tend to notice immediately when they have a saline deflation because they experience a volume change between breasts. It is harder to detect when a silicone implant is ruptured. It usually requires an MRI study to diagnose. Unlike saline implants, if there is a rupture in the cohesive silicone gel implants the breast volume typically remains undisturbed. Although it is not a medical emergency, it is recommended by the FDA and implant manufacturers to exchange the breast implants if there is a known deflation or rupture.

Myth: A patient is never allowed to ride in an airplane if they have breast implants

Fact: If you are someone who enjoys traveling, you are in luck! It is ok to fly in an airplane after breast augmentation surgery. Commercial airplanes have set standards for safety including cabin pressure checks. Even though the implants are considered safe to fly, your board certified plastic surgeon may give you restrictions as to how soon you can travel or carry luggage immediately after surgery.
