Breast Implant Explantation (Implant Removal)
Breast Augmentation surgery has consistently ranked number one in cosmetic surgical procedures for the last four years. 2010 cosmetic procedure statistics* show approximately 296,000 women selected to enhance their breasts and cleavage with breast implants. There were also approximately 21,714 breast implant removal surgeries last year. Some women removed their implants and had them replaced with new implants through implant exchange surgery, other patients opted to remove the implants and enhance their natural breast size with a lift procedure called mastopexy. In some cases patients decided to remove them all together with no additional cosmetic procedure.

Breast implants are not for everyone and for a variety of different reasons some women may decide they do not want them any longer. When you place an implant inside the body the skin produces new skin and stretches to accept the implant. Depending on your skin’s elasticity, tissue integrity, size of implants, and the length of time that you have had them, your breast skin may contract back slightly. The appearance will never look as it did prior to breast augmentation, but some women see the breasts restored to a natural appearance without any additional surgery. However, most experience a slight to moderate degree of sagging after explantation and would benefit with combining an explantation with a lift procedure. There are many different types of lift procedures so it is pertinent that you discuss your options with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon.
