How to Prepare for Your Mommy Makeover

Many women consider plastic surgery after becoming a mother. Motherhood changes you in every way possible, and while you may be thrilled about all the joyous moments you now get to spend with your child, you may be less than pleased with the physical changes that pregnancy and childbirth bring. There is no denying that a woman’s body changes dramatically during and after pregnancy, and for women that are dissatisfied with their new shape, plastic surgery may help restore their pre-pregnancy silhouette. The Mommy Makeover is a combination of cosmetic surgeries that target the areas most affected by pregnancy and childbirth.

Choosing Your Treatment Plan

A Mommy Makeover is a hand-tailored combination of cosmetic procedures that aim to restore a mother’s physique. While it typically focuses on the breasts and abdomen, you can choose whichever procedures you want for your Mommy Makeover. To begin preparing yourself for surgery, you need to first decide on specifics for your treatment plan. Most women include breast surgery in a Mommy Makeover. This may be breast augmentation for some, breast lift for others, or sometimes a combination of both. Many women develop a “deflated” or “sagging” breast appearance after having children. This is due to the rapid fluctuation in size from the production of milk during and immediately after pregnancy. Breast implants can restore lost volume; however, some women choose to focus on removing excess skin and uplifting the placement of the breasts rather than enhancing the size. Another area that is usually addressed is the abdomen. Tummy tuck surgery removes excess skin and tissue from the lower abdomen and tightens the abdominal muscles that were forced to stretch during pregnancy and childbirth. In addition to a tummy tuck, liposuction can be used to remove excess fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, and many other areas of the body.

Preparing Yourself Physically

Once you have determined the procedures you wish to undergo, you can start to think about the timing of your surgery. It is often a good idea to wait a few months after pregnancy before you consider any plastic surgery. This will give your body adequate time to heal and recover or stabilize after giving birth. Also, you should understand that all surgical procedures include downtime. You will not be able to carry or care for your child alone for at least one to two weeks after your surgery, as stress and physical activity can negatively affect your recovery and results.

While your Mommy Makeover will improve the contours of your physique no matter where you start, results are often more noticeable and easier to maintain the closer you are to your ideal weight.

Maintaining Your Results

Maintaining a stable weight through diet and exercise will help to ensure that your results are long lasting. However, the quality of your results will change if there is a future pregnancy. Many plastic surgeons recommend scheduling your Mommy Makeover when you are fairly sure that there are no additional pregnancies in your future. You need to remember that it was pregnancy and childbirth that made you consider these procedures initially, and another pregnancy may affect your body in much the same way.
